A Partridge On A Pear Tree Wallpaper

It's #Day1 of our advent calendar countdown and we have fruity décor in store...

The original song which inspired the modern day carol The 12 Days of Christmas, was actually a mnemonic to help young Christians remember the key teachings of their faith.

One the first day of Christmas the carol mentions the gift of a partridge in a pear tree.

The partridge then from this religious point of view, is said to be a representation of Jesus Christ himself. The pear tree the partridge sits in is a representation of strength, fruitfulness and giving.

Undoubtedly this is one reason why pears have long played a hugely symbolic role throughout the Christmas period and also why it has been a common image used in home décor.

In fact, fruit imagery in wallpaper has been a prominent feature in many homes from as early as the 1920’s.
Characteristically featured in the kitchen, fruit wallpaper played an integral part in interior design trends throughout the decades. From rustic farmhouses to bold fifties designs take a look at some of our favourite pear interior designs for 2016.

The Rustic

This Galerie collection from John Lewis is a great example of 1930’s / 1940’s interior style. Largely influenced by the Art Deco movement with a transition into the arts and crafts era of romance and decoration – wallpapers such as these were indicative to the function of a room and used to demonstrate homeowners passions.

The Galerie Kitchen Wallpaper Border is intrinsic to creating a rural farmhouse kitchen feel to your home. Try adding to a cream wall for a subtle flair or use the wallpaper for a complete vintage look.

Available at John Lewis from £19.95
