A New Home Could Reduce Those Winter Heating Bills!

Orion Homes tell us why...

We’ve reached a time of year when temperatures are steadily dropping, so if the sight of your latest heating bill sends shivers down your spine, it could be time to consider buying a new build home.

According to a new report by the NHBC Foundation, a new home built to the latest building regulations can cost half as much to heat as a Victorian house of the same size.

It’s well known that household energy costs have been rising steeply for years, so having an energy-efficient property is more important than ever. The NHBC Foundation’s report titled ‘The advantages of new homes is based on a survey of 2,000 people who had recently moved into a new home.

They were asked what they considered the advantages of new homes to be and many pointed to their energy efficiency. If you’re not yet convinced about the benefits of buying a new build home, the report contains a number of figures which are likely to make you warm to the idea.

It shows that annual energy bills are expected to be around £440 lower in a modern one bedroom ground floor apartment than its Victorian equivalent. Energy bills for a four bedroom new build detached property are estimated at £1,050 – saving £1,400 compared to those of a 19th century house.

All kinds of home improvements can enhance energy performance, including new loft and wall insulation, modern energy-efficient boilers, double glazing and draught proofing. Unfortunately, their initial cost can be extremely expensive in older properties and in many cases there are limits to the level of energy savings that it’s possible to achieve in comparison to modern standards.

In contrast, a new home already includes all of these features designed and built as standard to meet UK building regulations. When you buy new build, you have peace of mind in the knowledge that your home provides energy-efficiency by law.

When you’re looking at various potential homes to buy, we always suggest that you consider what it would be like to live in during the depths of winter. An older property may feel appealing in the warm glow of July but it may not be quite so appealing when icy draughts and heat loss due to poor insulation bring an unwelcome chill in January.

If you visit an Orion Homes development, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome from our sales team as well as our homes, which now feature our highest-ever specification including the latest energy-efficient boilers.
