Home Decor Tips Fit For A Lord (And Probably A King Too)

You can bring a little lordly luxury into your home, and you don’t need a king’s ransom to do it!

On the tenth day of Christmas Lords are said to have been leaping. Maybe they were celebrating another Christmas in a fabulous home, who knows?! But one thing we are sure of, is that you can bring a little lordly luxury into your home, and you don’t need a king’s ransom to do it!

One of the easiest, and cheapest ways to add a luxurious, regal feel to your home is to choose the right colour. Pick deep purples, rich reds and royal blues and of course an accent colour of gold or silver to really create an expensive look and feel.

Purple has long been understood as representing wealth, luxury and indulgence (it’s why Cadbury’s chose it after all) and that’s why deep reds and dark blues can also be used to create the same feel as they lie within the same range.

Another neat trick to really create a sumptuous, comfortable and indulgent room is to make the most of fabric. Statement curtains that use lots of pleats and swags are perfect for decadently framing your windows

Fabric sofas and extra cushions also create the same effect in sitting rooms. In particular, fabrics with a satin or silk sheen are ideal for achieving this style. Not only do they look expensive, they also reflect light around the room making everything appear brighter, wider and more spacious.

Last but not least, for a lordly, regal feel in the bedroom, go all out with a four poster bed with drapes, rich bedding with matching pillows, cushions and throws and for the pièce de résistance, how about a chaise longue?

Another cheap and easy way to create a regal room is to make the most of pictures. While most of us won’t have the budget to necessarily afford a painting or a picture that is six foot tall by four ft wide like you often find in country homes and lordly estates, what you can do, is group smaller images together to create a similarly imposing effect.

You can also make pictures appear larger on the wall by choosing a wider mount and of course, picking a gold gilt frame wouldn’t hurt either. Ayers and Graces have an excellent range of gilt picture frames in both gold (like the one below) and silver as well as black and white if you perfect a contemporary edge.

Other finishing touches to consider are candles, which provide softer light that bounces of reflective surfaces. Scented candles can also appeal to your other senses, filling a room with indulgent scents that complement rich surroundings.

So there you have it, for a lordly home all you need to do is:

  • Pick purples
  • Go for gold
  • Layer your fabrics
  • Build comfort with cushions
  • Hang your pictures
  • Light the room with candles
