The Langs 'Rightsize' With Their New Redrow Home

Nothing compares to a new build for retirees William and Barbara Lang, who’ve moved to a new Redrow home in Herne Bay

The couple initially considered buying a bungalow so that William didn’t need to climb stairs, but with that style of property in short supply and mainly in need of repairs and renovations, they opted to buy a brand new two-storey home and have a stairlift fitted.

William and Barbara Lang have rightsized to a new Redrow home at The Fairways, Herne Bay.
“We’d bought our last four-bedroom home 20 years ago as a new build, but decided it was time to move to something easier to manage. We initially wanted a bungalow because I have arthritis in my knees, but couldn’t find one that we liked that didn’t need lots of money spending on it. We were driving through Herne Bay when we saw that Redrow were going to build and we thought ‘let’s go for another house’,” William explained.
“I’m 80 and my wife is 77 so it seemed funny buying a house again, but we knew that with a brand new house everything would be taken care of and we could just move straight in. When you compare what we’ve got in this house to the bungalows we viewed there’s no comparison.”
Like most buyers, location was a key factor for the Langs.
“We’ve lived in the area for the last 20 years so know it well,” William added. “Canterbury and Broadstairs are nearby and the A299 connects you to the M2. It’s important to be close to family when you’re getting on in age. To drive to our daughter’s in Rochester it’s only 35 minutes door to door. “
After living in their previous home for 20 years, and having previously lived in America, the couple had amassed lots of possessions.
“Moving to somewhere smaller meant we had to get rid of some of our furniture, but we still have plenty of room and all four bedrooms have fitted wardrobes,” William added. “All of our furniture was packed and we had a terrific removals firm who placed all of the furniture where we wanted. It wasn’t stressful like you think it would be, it was straight forward.”
Using My Redrow, the members’ only area of the Redrow website, buyers can customise their new home before they move in, selecting the finish of things like the kitchen and bathroom or adding features such as fitted wardrobes.
William praised everyone at Redrow for their help and support in helping make their move a smooth one.
“All of the staff at Redrow including Linda Tipping and Donna Clarke, the sales consultant, site manager Bob Reardon and his assistant Paul Hughes, along with Josh Cullen have been absolutely terrific from our very first visit through to the welcome party and moving in. We couldn’t fault them,” he said.
“We’re happy to recommend Redrow. Our grandson’s bought a Cambridge style Redrow home at Ryarsh Park near West Malling. As ours is an Oxford we’re going to have a boat race!”
An Oxford style property, similar to the Langs is one of three show homes at The Fairways. It features a lounge at the front, with open plan kitchen and dining room spanning the width of the rear; while the addition of a utility keeps the washer and dryer out of the kitchen. Downstairs cloakrooms and en-suite master bedrooms help minimise the morning rush for the family bathroom.  A detached property, the Oxford also benefits from an integral garage.
Current availability at The Fairways includes three and four-bedroom homes, with prices from £329,995.
