Living in Blantyre

Blantyre is a town located by the River Clyde in South Lanarkshire, just 8 miles southeast of Glasgow.

During the 18th century, Blantyre was a centre for large manufacturing of cotton-related products, whilst in the 19th and 20th centuries, the town was heavily involved in coal mining. The town however is more famous for being the birthplace of David Livingstone, the 19th century explorer and missionary, rather than its industrial past. The David Livingstone Centre is a popular attraction in the town today, and is located in the house where he was born and began his working life.

The town is served by a railway station, with services running through to Glasgow, Motherwell, Lanark and Larkhall. Residents can also travel by bus, with services also running through to Glasgow, as well as East Kilbride. For those who prefer to travel by car, Glasgow is just a 25 minute drive away, making Blantyre a great base for those looking to work in the city. Other amenities in the town include several primary schools, as well as a secondary school, post office, pharmacy, Asda superstore and leisure centre.
